There is this police notice... so tell your elderly at home....
1. Recently, several cases of theft in dwelling were committed by three men pretending to conduct prayers/blessings at various housing estates island-wide. So far, cases have been reported in Hougang, Ho Ching Road, Tampines, Telok Blangah and Redhill. Generally, the culprits had targeted victims in their 40s or 70s.
2. The culprits, equipped with religious artefacts, would first ask to enter the victim’s unit in order to conduct prayers or blessings. Secondly, after gaining entry, one of the culprits would distract the victim by chanting some prayers while the other two culprits would search for valuables (money and jewellery) in other parts of the unit and commit the theft. After about 10 minutes, the culprits would leave without the victim knowing about the theft.
3. The culprits are described as follows:
i. Three male Indians;
ii. Believed to be foreigners;
iii. Aged between 20-29 years old;
iv. Conversed in Tamil, simple Malay or English.
4. You can prevent such crimes by adopting the following measures:
a) Unless you have called for their services (electrician, plumber, repairman, etc), do not allow strangers into your home. If in doubt, call your neighbour for assistance or contact the police.
b) Do not keep large sums of money in the house. Keep the money in a safe or
deposit it in the bank.
c) Always secure your house or apartment even if you are inside the unit.
